Customer Review: Starts good, crashes in the end.
Don't buy this book. I'll summarize it for you. Don't just send out resumes, go and talk to people at the organization you want to work for. Happiness is more important than money. This book gets really preachy, religious, and cheezy in the second half. It has no place in a career book and is in very bad taste. Some quotes from the book, "Your first mission here on Earth is ...to seek to stand hour by hour in the conscious presence of God, the One from whom your Mission is derived." "Your second Mission here on Earth is .. to do what you can, moment by moment, day by day, step by step, to make this world a better place, following the leading and guidance of God's Spirit within you and around you." Save your money, just watch televangelists on TV if you want your life controlled by God.

Customer Review: It Has Worked So Far....
While I am only a high school Sophmore, and I don't have a *real* job, this book has been very helpful in deciding what to shoot for doing. I've heard people call this book too vague, but they can't tell you exactly what to do; it doesn't work that way. Once you get through the personality quiz portion, the author gives a somewhat detailed description of your specific personality type (I for example am and ENFP) and throws in suggestions in the description and also give a modest list of other possibilities. I'll admit it was a bit vauger than I had hoped but it gives you plenty of room to move around and a great place to start. I'm lucky I found this book when I did (and not 3-4 years into college) because I found some satisfying career options that I would not normally have chosen for myself and they are on the opposite end of the spectrum from what I was previously considering. (looking at this run-on sentence, you will be relieved to know that none of my choices are to be an English teacher) Overall, this was a good book. There was a lot of filler describing the different personality characteristics that I found redundant only because I have gone over this in school a couple times. However, if you are unfamiliar with this territory, the explanations will be quite helpful.

Nice Girls Don't Get the Corner Office: 101 Unconscious Mistakes Women Make That Sabotage Their Careers

For every professional woman who wants to get ahead—but feels she is at an impasse—NICE GIRLS DON'T GET THE CORNER OFFICE comes to the rescue. Although it's less threatening and more politically correct for women to point the finger outwardly when assessing why they are overlooked for promotions and assignments for which they are superbly qualified, the real answers may lie inward.
In this book, Dr. Lois Frankel, an internationally recognized corporate coach and author, reveals the 101 self-sabotaging behaviors women learn as girls-behaviors and habits that are now holding them back in the workplace, such as couching statements as questions, tilting your head when you speak, waiting to be noticed and pinching company pennies. From executive to entry level, every woman needs to know what she is doing to subconsciously sound, look, act, market herself, and/or be treated like a "girl". This book will help women to become aware of when and how they are damaging their career and it will give them the advice and tips they need to help replace these self-defeating behaviors with more effective ones—and finally claim the corner office they so richly deserve.

Customer Review: I'd rather be nice.
I would much rather be considered nice and earn my way through this world the way I am. Being myself in the business arena has worked well for me thus far, and I don't care if the trend is to deviate from feminity. I think we should respect everyone, and not propegate the evolution of a sexless society. All in all, I would much rather be a nice person and have people like me than be a b%tch with a nice office. People remember you by how you made them feel, not by how much money or power you had.

Developing Talents: Careers for Individuals with Asperger Syndrome and High-Functioning Autism

This career planning guide is written specifically for high-functioning adolescents and young adults on the autism spectrum, their families, teachers, and counselors. The two authors weave together a unique blend of information and advice based on personal experiences. Temple Grandin draws from her own experience with autism spectrum disorders and her professional career, and Kate Duffy uses her expertise on employment issues and the mother of two teenagers with autistic-like behaviors. The result is an extremely useful and practical book that introduces step-by-step processes for the job search with a major section on the impact ASD has in the workplace, including managing sensory problems, how to nurture and turn talents and special interests into paid work, jobs that are particularly suited to individuals on the spectrum, and much more. First-hand accounts of job experiences and advice from individuals representing a broad range of careers particularly suited for high-functioning individuals on the autism spectrum round off this exciting new resource.

Customer Review: A must read for teens, adults and parents!
Dr. Grandin has taken her knowledge, expertise and sensitivity one step further in Developing Talents: Careers for Individuals with Asperger Syndrome and High Functioning Autism. She offers many ideas for those affected by or those working with these individuals. This area is filled with people of talent who are underemployed. An example of one of the suggestions offered - an individual who is interested in cartoons and spends their days drawing - all day - being encouraged to go to a museum of cartooning, learning about different kinds of cartoons, the history of cartoons which expands their interest - meeting others with the same interest. It is not enough to have a talent or the intellectual ability to understand complex things. Without work, Dr. Grandin explains, her life would not have had order, content or meaning. She covers many different kinds of jobs that people on the autism spectrum can accommodate to and ones that would be more difficult for them. The book is well thought out and because Dr. Grandin is herself on the spectrum and spends so much of her time speaking to others at her many presentations she has analyzed a great deal of what works and what does not. This book is an absolute must read! I run a large group for parents, professionals and individuals and it is one of my first recommendations. This book gives concrete suggestions and hope.

Take This Job And Ship It: How Corporate Greed And Brain-Dead Politics Are Selling Out America

Our trade deficit increases by $2 billion a day. Pharmaceutical companies and their lobbyists have such influence in Washington that Medicare, by current law, is not allowed to negotiate lower drug prices. We import oil on an ever-increasing scale, putting ourselves into dept with the Saudis, the Kuwaitis, and other Middle Eastern nations. With their windfall profits, they continue to buy American assets. China’s booming economy and abundance of cheap labor are threatening our economic survival. We have mortgaged our fortunes, our principles, and our way of life.
In this comprehensive look at the real, human toll of America’s unsound trade policy, Senator Byron Dorgan exposes the myth of “free trade.” Indeed, free trade is not free; it is something that is slowly but surely draining away American prosperity. Sure, Chinese labor can drive down prices at Wal-Mart; at the same time, however, those saved wages—dollars that would have gone to buy these cheaper goods—are gone. Too soon, it will all come crashing down.
Major U.S. corporations continue to ship jobs overseas by the millions and, because of their influence in Washington, avoid paying a king’s ransom in taxes. Many billions of dollars that these companies fleece from the government and the American people go overwhelmingly to investments in expanding production capabilities overseas. In short, our government is in the grip of corporate and foreign interests, and the American worker has born the brunt of this culture of corruption. How can we stem the tide of outsourcing? Why has the White House done nothing? Will the middle class survive?
From describing corporate profiteering to calling to action a lethargic, inactive government, Byron Dorgan exposes the truth about the destructive relationship between corporations and Congress and proposes strategies for what can really be done to preserve America’s preeminence in the world.

“Written with poignant stories, persuasive logic and superb factual support, this book is a wake up call for every American who cares about U.S. policy on trade and jobs.  One doesn’t have to agree with all that Senator Dorgan writes in this book to find it remarkably compelling.”  --Senator Tom Daschle

“If you’re tired of seeing good American jobs shipped overseas in search of cheap labor, you’re going to appreciate this book.  Senator Dorgan and I have joined forces in the Senate to fight the trade policies of a weakening America.  His book offers real solutions that can strengthen our country.”  --Senator Lindsay Graham

:If you think that no one in Washington gives a damn about about corporate greed and the decimation of America’s middle class, you haven’t met Senator Byron Dorgan.  In TAKE THIS JOB AND SHIP IT,” this modern day Prairie Populist pops the greedhead right in their snouts, using both facts and a stinging sense of humor.  Byron’s book is both a rallying cry and a blueprint for action.  If you believe America is headed in the wrong direction and you want to do something about it read this book, then help us elect more Byron Dorgans.”  --Jim Hightower

“Senator Byron Dorgan is one of the few elected official of either party who ahs consistently and unwaveringly defended the interests of American working men and women and their families.  His commitment to our country and the truth is inspiring.  His book is a trenchant and timely examination of America’s so-called free trade policies and the exorbitant cost to our middle class and our nation.”  --Lou Dobbs

“I watched Senator Dorgan take on the powerful interests in the U.S. Senate, and this book shows that he is still at it.  Our country’s trade policies are a scandal, and Dorgan has the guts to expose it and name names.  He also tells us how to put our country back on track.  This is an important book that might finally call our country to action to protect good jobs and our way of life.” –Senator Fritz Hollings

Customer Review: What's The Matter With North Dakota?
If Thomas Frank wondered in his book "What's The Matter With Kansas?" why a formerly populist state such as Kansas became a red state, he may also be wondering why a red state such as North Dakota could elect a populist like Byron Dorgan for six terms to the House and three terms to the Senate. It could very well be that, aside from being a skilled debater, he has a talent for stating the issues clearly and forcefully. In his latest book, he takes on the Washington consensus on "free trade." When asked why populists such as himself have been losing in their fight for fair trade, he replies that "the other side has stolen the language." (This is the same argument George Lakoff makes in "Whose Freedom.") Dorgan argues that the free trade pacts are neither free nor fair; they were written by corporate lobbyists who write into them many protections for their corporate clients and none for ordinary citizens. Many Democrats have also signed onto these trade pacts, not only for fear of being labelled anti-business or protectionist, but because these corporations provide large campaign contributions. No country practices free trade - the US included. Every country has some form of managed trade. Conservatives, of course, cannot argue for managed trade, not only for ideological reasons, but for their cynicism of governments ability to do the job. For this reason free trade has not been working. Free trade, as it is practised today means corporations can transfer capital and technology anywhere in the world, employ cheap labor to build their products and ship them back to the US. This is greatly contributing to the $700 to $800 billion annual trade deficit and it is decimating our labor force. With these trade figures one would become cynical about leaving management of the world economy to multinational corporations. For all his populist sloganeering about corporate greed, Drogan understands that multinationals are politically neutral and designed to maximize profits. It is for the "brain-dead politics" that he vents most of his anger. Drogan argues that it is up to the US government to create free and fair trade policies that will raise labor and environmental standards worldwide. Instead of having the American worker compete with foreign workers who are paid $.50 an hour, we should be raising the bar for countries and our own corporations who are exporting to the US. Drogan has a laundry list of policy recommendations designed to reverse the trade deficit: some of which are reasonable and others which are futile. We need a fair trade plan (as opposed to the current auto pilot); we need to look at the idea of import certificates (suggested by Warren Buffet); we need to design a tax system to keep American jobs from going offshore; and we need to consolidate the 17 agencies dealing with trade into one. The futile includes having Congress set ever higher ceilings on trade deficits, which is what they do for the national debt, and which serves no useful purpose. Drogan is correct that action must be taken, another decade of the current deficits will force us to sell off larges pieces of our wealth - the American worker included - and it will create a vicious circle of downward pressure on our standard of living. Conservative and neoliberal critics are a bit naive if they think the invisible hand will magically rectify the current imbalances because other countries have created export oriented economies that are designed to habitually run surpluses. As more people become disenchanted with gobalization in its current form, Dorgan will be sure to gain a wider audience.

Customer Review: Belongs on your bookshelf
The Rites of Passage belongs on anyone's bookshelf who's interested in actively managing their careers and gain that extra edge. Even if you're not close to $100k, the book gives you valuable insight into that realm. Understanding your boss and your boss' boss will make you a more valuable employee and may advance your career more than you realize. If you are at $100k+ I can't imagine successfully managing your career without Lucht's insight. His decades of experience will help you manage transitions properly and in a proactive manner. My only minor gripes are (1) The typesetting. I have a nagging feeling he did this himself, it could definitely be done better (2)The minor section on usage of the Internet is dated and could be done better. I doubt John had someone appropriate look this over. Still, he earns top rating. Thanks to manager-tools.com for recommending this book.

Inside Job: Unmasking the 9/11 Conspiracies

Inside Job is the definitive journalistic account of the hidden role of the Bush Whitehouse in perpetrating the 9/11 attacks. Veteran journalist Jim Marrs weaves into his coverage the kind of relentless undercover research that long ago established him as one of America's leading conspiracy researchers. Originally written under contract for a large New York publisher, this book passed legal review and received extensive editorial support only to be cancelled suddenly in early 2003 with little explanation by the publisher.

Customer Review: Marrs Must Be From Mars
This is the same Jim Marrs that has been writing about the JFK conspiracy for 40 years. Well, looks like he found another topic to fatten his wallet. Don't waste your time with this boring nonsense.

A Dirty Job: A Novel

Charlie Asher is a pretty normal guy. A little hapless, somewhat neurotic, sort of a hypochondriac. He's what's known as a Beta Male: the kind of fellow who makes his way through life by being careful and constant -- you know, the one who's always there to pick up the pieces when the girl gets dumped by the bigger/taller/stronger Alpha Male.

But Charlie's been lucky. He owns a building in the heart of San Francisco, and runs a secondhand store with the help of a couple of loyal, if marginally insane, employees. He's married to a bright and pretty woman who actually loves him for his normalcy. And she, Rachel, is about to have their first child.

Yes, Charlie's doing okay for a Beta. That is, until the day his daughter, Sophie, is born. Just as Charlie -- exhausted from the birth -- turns to go home, he sees a strange man in mint-green golf wear at Rachel's hospital bedside, a man who claims that no one should be able to see him. But see him Charlie does, and from here on out, things get really weird. . . .

People start dropping dead around him, giant ravens perch on his building, and it seems that everywhere he goes, a dark presence whispers to him from under the streets. Strange names start appearing on his nightstand notepad, and before he knows it, those people end up dead, too. Yup, it seems that Charlie Asher has been recruited for a new job, an unpleasant but utterly necessary one: Death. It's a dirty job. But hey, somebody's gotta do it.

Christopher Moore, the man whose Lamb served up Jesus' "missing years" (with the funny parts left in), and whose Fluke found the deep humor in whale researchers' lives, now shines his comic light on the undiscovered country we all eventually explore -- death and dying -- and the results are hilarious, heartwarming, and a hell of a lot of fun.

Customer Review: Funny & Interesting!
I am definitely now a Christopher Moore fan. This book wasn't as funny as "The Stupidest Angel" ~~ but it has some funny moments in this book as well as some sentimental moments and some down right hysterical moments ~~ and the monsters in this book are more funny than demonic. At least, that is how I viewed it. This book focuses on Charlie, who is a single dad of Sophie, and he discovers that he is a Death Merchant after his wife died after childbirth. Minty Fresh from "Coyote Blue" is in this book ~~ and he is also a Death Merchant ~~ only of cds and records, while Charlie sells used and vintage clothing as well as other antiques. And that is just the beginning. Here are the darkest forces of the world from down below coming to take over the world and plunge it into darkness ~~ and Charlie's on a desperate race to save all these souls before they become consumed by these three harpies. Along the way, his mother dies, his sister, who keeps stealing his vintage designer suits, falls in love with another woman and Charlie's daughter gets protected by two hell-hounds. It's a crazy adventure and while surreal, it's funny, sad and poignant all at once. Seriously, if you need a dose of humor in your life, PLEASE pick up a Christopher Moore book ~~ he's hilarious and even his monsters, while trying to be scary, are hilarious. His books are just pure fun and I love how he pokes fun at everything ~~ his books are not meant to be taken seriously and it's perfect medicine for those who need a jolt of laughter in their lives. This book is no exception. 9-26-06

Customer Review: Can't we all just get along!
This book with mainly two things in mind: communication and understanding. The author's adopt their longstanding research about the world of typewatching into an intelligible book about the main areas of the work environment such as problem solving, conflict resolution, time management, etc. Any manager that has direct reports would do themselves a favor by reading this book. This book will also provide support for a subordinate that doesn't quite "fit in." For those hurried types, each chapter ends with guidlines in a charted format for working with those of other preferences. Although this is somewhat useful, what I don't like about the approach is that they focus on the four preferences instead of focusing on the four major groupings, forcing the reader to combine and study the effects. For example, the charts will explain how an E should lead an I, etc. I believe that it would be much more useful to categorize the charts by the four major groups (e.g. NF's, NT's, SJ's, SP's) and how to interact with other types in each subject area. To the author's credit, the book does provide an overview on the major strengths and potential weaknesses of each of the 16 types in the workplace, for those who aren't familiar with the MBTI. However, it does not really provide a concrete method of determining type, leaving the reader somewhat guessing with the use of anecdotal phrases. Overall, I find this book well worth the investment. However, I would not recommend this book as an introduction to typewatching. If you are familiar with type, the specific chapters will be meaningful, if not, pick up either the precursor to this book by the same author's or one of David Keirsey's works prior to reading this.

Customer Review: 4+ Stars
Excellent resource and touchstone for new entrepreneurs or floundering entrepreneurs. I purchased this book a few months ago when my husband and I were evaluating a business we wanted to buy. Mr Kiyosaki brings up several interesting and realistic aspects of self employment, while showing how to evaluate what type of business person you are. This book helped us become more self aware of our strengths and our weaknesses. The writing was relaxed and easy to understand. I have now passed the book on to a nephew that is a beginning entrepreneur and told him it is, "a must read."

Customer Review: not bad, not great
Well, if you have the book itself. There is not much new information. This is a good idea for a class, but I would not recommend it if you are buying it on you own. On the other hand, there some cool stuff in it, but I don't think it is worth the price.
