6 Tips for Surviving
Wireless Number Portability
Wireless
number portability has made it possible
for millions of consumers to switch wireless
carriers without losing their current
phone number. Before you take the plunge,
here are some tips and strategies to consider
so that you don't get burned.
TIP
#1: Wait for the kinks to be worked out
With
new back-office systems for all carriers, there are bound
to be glitches in the beginning. Hold off on making your
wireless switch for at least 2-3 weeks so that "bugs"
can be worked out between carriers.
TIP #2: Make the switch BEFORE you cancel existing
service
Your
phone number belongs to your current carrier. If you cancel
before the paperwork has enabled the transfer to your
new carrier, you are out of luck. You cannot transfer
something you no longer have.
TIP #3: Know Your Rights
FCC
regulations state that a carrier cannot stop you from
switching - even if you owe them money. This includes
money that is owed due to a contract-termination charge.
TIP #4: Pay balances before cancelling
Even
though a carrier cannot slow or stop you from switching
because of a balance due, it's best to pay any outstanding
bills to your current carrier to avoid unnecessary hassles
and possible blemishes to a credit rating.
TIP #5: Avoid a 2-Year Contract
Carriers
are attempting to lure consumers to lock in now with 2-year
contracts. Even though the offer may be enticing, avoid
a 2-year contract. In the long run you will save more
money.
TIP #6: Audit Bills Regularly
Stay
on top of new deals and be sure to routinely audit your
existing services. With the addition of new fees for number
portability, it's more important than ever to stay on
top of your bills to discover savings opportunities.
