Motorola Rokr Misses Its Role

By Jonny Evans (MAC WORLD UK)

After waiting for a year it seems Macworld readers are somewhat underwhelmed by Motorola's iTunes phone.

The ROKR doesn't rock, it seems.

In an online poll, Macworld asked readers: "When will you upgrade your mobile to an iTunes phone?"

The answer suggests 100 songs isn't quite enough to make our readers burst out in song - of 884 readers who voted just 100 people plan to 'switch' to ROKR, a measly 12 per cent of the survey group.

Just 25 voters (3 per cent) plan to grab a ROKR "as soon as possible". 32 voters (4 per cent) need to wait until their current contract expires and 43 voters (5 per cent) intend to wait until their network supports the device. READ ENTIRE ARTICLE>>>

The RAZR V3`s design takes the standard clamshell form factor to the next level with an impressive, anodized aluminum construction. A large 176 x 220 color display with 262,000 colors dominates the inside of the top cover. The outside cover of the handset sports a supplementary 96 x 80 full-color display that can display pictures, time, call information, battery and signal strength, and more. The VGA camera lens is housed above this display. Up/down buttons are placed on the left side for volume control while a voice button on the right side of the unit allows you to enter voice memos and create voice dialing profiles. Most of the phone`s features and on-screen menus are controlled by a five-way center button on the handset`s backlit control pad, which is precision cut from a single sheet of nickel-plated copper alloy. A charging port and USB data cable port is placed on the bottom of the phone.

Calling Features
The RAZR V3`s internal phone book can hold up to 1000 contacts while the phone`s picture ID system allows you to assign pictures to your most common callers. It also supports polyphonic ringtones as well as MP3 ringers, allowing you to use portions of your favorite songs to alert you to incoming calls. A number of ringtones come preloaded on the phone. There`s even an included application, MotoMixer, that lets you mix your own ringtones. For times when you want to be discreet, there`s a vibrating alert. A built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear while voice activated dialing makes calling your friends, family and associates as easy as saying their names.

Because the RAZR V3 is Bluetooth enabled, wireless headsets can be configured with the phone for total handsfree operation.

Messaging, Internet and Tools
The RAZR V3 is a messaging and wireless Internet powerhouse. Support is built in for sending and receiving pictures, text, graphics, sound and video via messages. When used in combination with the phone`s built-in still and video camera, MMS opens up a whole new world of messaging fun. Instant messaging is also supported via AOL Instant Messenger and the phone ships with a built-in email client with support for POP3, IMAP4 and SMTP protocols.

You get the RAZR, Bluetooth headset and Y-adapter for one low price.
iTap text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users. And with Internet service and a data plan (not included) and its Bluetooth or USB data capability, the phone can be used as a wireless modem for laptops and PDAs.

A number of handy software tools are bundled with the RAZR V3 including a voice memo recorder, a calculator with currency converter, a calendar and an alarm clock. Use the phone`s Bluetooth capability to set up a wireless link with a Bluetooth accessory or connect to a computer or hand-held device to exchange and synchronize data. The phone also supports the SyncML PC synchronization standard, can be used with Motorola`s Mobile Phone Tools PC application to manage and synchronize contacts, calendar and other data with your PC.

Imaging and Entertainment
With 5 MB of internal memory storage, the RAZR V3 shines in the entertainment department. The phone`s VGA camera features a 4x zoom, image quality options, and an auto-timer so you can be in your pictures, too. Capture stills and then send them to your friends via MMS messaging or email, or to your PC via USB or Bluetooth. The phone is capable of MPEG4 video playback when you receive a video message, or if you upload video to the phone via USB or Bluetooth. The RAZR V3 also supports custom graphics for wallpapers so you can dress up the phone to suit your fancy.

Operating the RAZR Battery Door
The RAZR V3`s battery cover is designed to have a very tight fit with the phone case. You may need to use your fingernail or a very thin instrument to depress the small battery cover release button. When replacing the cover, make sure the cover securely snaps into place before operating the phone.

The Motorola RAZR V3 weighs 3.35 ounces and measures 3.86 x 2.09 x .54 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 6.67 hours of digital talk time, and up to 250 hours of digital standby time. Reviews for Motorola RAZR V3 Phone (Unlocked) + HS815 Bluetooth Headset

Review of Motorola RAZR V3 Phone (Unlocked)
I was kinda bummed out because the first phone I received was defected. But the second one came right away and worked perfectly. The phone is beautiful, light, and durable.
Excellent phone...Just get it!!!!
Don`t be swayed by all the prudent negative comments. Some peoples technological quest for perfection is just rage against the machine. This Razor phone has everything I need in a cell phone. The plus is... it syncs to my Apple powerbook, through Bluetooth. It`s got style, along with my bluetooth head set, I got the Logitec rechargeable model and it is clear with no buzz or background noise like most comments. I am on T mobile and my reception is great, I use my phone in all the major city`s from Houston TX. to Milwaukee WI. and my service is excellent. Some calls do have drop outs but ya got to remember... calls are coming in from other cell companies and inferior FREE phones, so what do you expect... we can`t all have Razors and one cell company.
I`m very happy with this Motorola Razor. Just buy the phone and try it out... but if your quest for perfection excels our human intervention of technology, ask to use gods phone.

Nice Phone but dont get it from TigerDirect.
Very nice phone it does everything I would want a phone to do. I can make my own ring tones and put my picture on the phone myself. Nice size big screen. With all phone their will be problem but you have to work throught them. Now with Tiger Direct I ordered my phone with the HS815 Bluetooth headset and they send me the old headset. I wrote them and I havent heard from them. If you want this phone get it just not from Tiger Direct

Product Description of Motorola i275 Phone - Black (Nextel)

With the i275, Nextel injects their line of powerful phones with a serious dose of fun. With a built-in VGA camera, multimedia messaging, downloadable games, a speakerphone, and support for Nextel`s legendary Direct Connect walkie-talkie service, this phone is all about lots of fun and plenty of functionality.

Take a closer look at the i275`s functions.
Design
The i275`s candybar form factor sports a large, 128 x 128 TFT color display with 65,000 colors. The speakerphone unit is located on the rear of the phone, as is the VGA (640 x 480) camera unit. Meanwhile, the trademark Direct Connect and menu scrolling functions can be controlled from the side of the phone. The phone`s control pad also features a five-way button that can control most of the phone`s functions. There`s also a 2.5-millimeter headset jack for connecting a hands-free headset.

Calling Features
The i275`s built-in address book can store up to 600 contacts for quick and easy management of phone numbers and email addresses. The phone comes with built-in polyphonic ringtones plus a vibrating alert. More polyphonic ringtones can be added via download from the Nextel Online service. Voice activated dialing makes calling your friends, family and associates as easy as saying their names, while a built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear. And if you have an emergency, the i275`s GPS location technology pinpoints your exact location when you dial 911.

One of the key features of any Nextel phone is support for Nextel`s Direct Connect walkie-talkie technology. The i275 fully supports the service, which allows for one-touch conversations with anyone else on a Nextel phone, or with entire groups of Direct Connect users. It`s like a having a CB radio with enough range to cover all of North America, Canada and Latin America. With the i275`s powerful Direct Talk function you can also communicate in walkie-talkie mode when you`re not even connected to the network. The system works anywhere, anytime between compatible phones within a range of up to 6 miles (range will vary based on terrain and conditions). Direct Talk provides a reliable back-up communications tool in times of emergency, network outage, or when traveling to remote areas not under Nextel coverage such as hiking, cruise vacations or inside buildings. And last but not least, the i275 features a walkie-talkie private speaker button. This switches from the external speaker to the earpiece for private conversations or to minimize disruptions in quiet environments.

Messaging, Internet and Tools
The i275 features MMS-based support for mobile-to-mobile or mobile-to-email text, images and audio messaging. When used with the phone`s built-in camera, MMS messaging opens up a whole new world of messaging fun. T9 text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users. Getting on the Internet anywhere is easy with the i275, as well. Nextel`s optional Nextel Online package allows you to read and send e-mails, exchange instant messages and view your favorite web content on your phone. Nextel Online also features games, ringtones, realtime news and sports updates, virtual address books, and more-- all delivered to your Nextel phone. Also, because the i725 is GPS-enabled, you can use Nextel`s location-based safety services like Mobile Locator, which allows you to locate a friend or family member`s phone location at anytime, right from your computer. And finally, the i275 ships with a calendar, as well as a time and date clock.

Vital Statistics
The Motorola i275 weighs 4.6 ounces and measures 4.8 x 1.93 x .98 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 165 minutes of digital talk time, and up to 101 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the IDEN 800 frequency. The phone comes with a one year limited warranty.

What`s in the Box
Motorola i275 handset, standard lithium-ion battery, travel charger, user`s manual.

Reviews for Motorola i275 Phone - Black (Nextel)

WARNING AGAINST NEXTEL
My problems with nextel did not stop when I canceled my service. I will get to the problems with the service. When I went to get a new phone a day before my contract expired, I of course wanted to keep my number. So as I went to get my Cingular phone (highly recommended), I had the old number switched to my new number. Today, I get in the mail my nextel statement for the month with a $200 early termination even though I had not canceled my service, but had simply got a new phone and switched my number over. This was on icing on the cake after 2 years of absolutely amazingy bad service from nextel. In my town, not a small town by any means, there are very few places that have any service. In the largest subdivision, you cannot get service anywhere. I constantly get comments from people trying to reach me that get the classic nextel line...Please hold while the nextel subscriber you are trying to reach is located. Most of the time I would not even recieve incoming calls, calls would go straight to my voice mail. Not only would I not get the calls, but often I would not even get the voice mails until days or even weeks later. When I did actually take calls (and call out), I cannot count the number of times I`ve had my call dropped. I recieved so many different error messages sometimes I wonder if they just spend all their time at nextel thinking of different error messages to program into their phones. That brings me to the selling point of nextel, the famed and well-loved direct connect feature. This is an absolute joke. Direct connect only works MAYBE half the time I tried to use it. Even then, in the middle of the conversation I would be greeted by the loud beep of my phone telling me I wont be talking to that person anymore. Of course, I would expect nothing less from the nextel network. Text messaging with nextel is next to impossible. If it did not take hours to send or recieve a message, it took days, or maybe didn`t even come at all. The internet access was fine, it the rare instance that it worked. Of course, when you don`t have service, you don`t get the internet access either. I was constantly getting the message "network not available". Calling and trying to complain to nextel is futile. Trying to get through to customer service takes forever and once you get through they do nothing. My experience with nextel has been nothing short of a disaster and I write this trying to warn anyone considering nextel. Stick with Verizon or Cingular and you will be much happier in the end. Don`t make the same mistake I did.
Reliable, cool phone
The nextel i275 phone has everything that most cell`s have, however I have yet to have a phone as relible as this. The battery last`s longer and it seems none of my calls ever get interupted by static or a dead tone. I love it, don`t know what else to say, its just a surperior quality cell phone, 5 stars to motorola!
AWESOME PHONE
I just got this phone the other day and boy does it work good! The camera`s great and Nextel has awesome reception. Usually Nextel is known for having the more "clunkier" and "larger" phone, but this phone is great especially for someone who just likes to stick their phone in their pocket. Buy this phone and you`ll clearly see why I rated this phone with 5 stars!

Motorola seeks edge with cellphone-radio

By Bob Keefe

Palm Beach Post-Cox News Service

Wednesday, September 14, 2005

LAS VEGAS - Motorola Inc. made a big splash last week when it joined Apple Computer Inc. in launching its iTunes cellphone with a built-in music player.

But Motorola is working on a concept that would take the transformation of cellphones into portable music players to another level.

In a challenge to satellite radio companies Sirius and XM Satellite Radio, Motorola's planned iRadio phones will let users download from the Internet commercial-free, customized radio programming from both independent and big radio networks around the globe for about $7 a month - a little more than half the cost of the satellite services.

In addition to the radio programming, which is stored on the phones after connecting them to home computers, users also can store hundreds of songs from their own music collections on the phones using a simple USB computer connection.

In all, the new iRadio phones will be able to store 10 hours or more of music or radio programming - much more than the Rokr phone Motorola showed off with Apple last week.

Users wouldn't be limited to listening to music on their handsets, either. Using a technology called Bluetooth, the iRadio phones can connect seamlessly and automatically with car radios or home stereo systems equipped with a tiny adapter.

"This is music that's a higher quality than satellite, higher than FM - it's as high a quality as CD," coming from a cellphone, Motorola marketing executive David Ulmer said at a technology conference here.

Motorola plans to formally launch iRadio at the annual Consumer Electronics Show here in January.

Other handset makers are trying to integrate music players with cellphones. But analyst Sharon Armbrust said Motorola's radio program feature and instant links to car radios and stereo systems are unique.

Stay Connected Without Dialing
This is a nice way to stay in touch with your kids, wife, or whoever at a sporting event, fair, while camping, or at the mall, etc. This beats a cell phone that does not come in the when you are hiking up to places like Half Dome (I learned the hard way).
good product... and a comment on "knock off"
I took a pair of T5950 on a 2 week trip. Using 2300mah nimh batteries, they last more than a day. The sound quality was very good. Remember, don`t crank the speaker volume to max, this actually distorts the sound. When in the city, I was able to use the T5950s about 10 street blocks apart. The sounds was very clear.

By the way, I saw a comment on Motorola "imposter" and "licensed knockoff" by HippoRadio here. HippoRadio clams T5950 is a true Moto product, while other models like T6500 are "a licensed knockoff of the T5950 by Motorola`s mainland-Chinese electronics manufacturer". He came to this conclusion because "a small indication on the rear of the T6500 package discloses that the product is Manufactured and sold by Giant International, Ltd., official licensee for this product."

Since I was looking to buy more Moto`s radios, just to verify, I emailed Motorola asking which models are made by Moto themselves.

Here is the official reply from Motorola`s customer service Marisol R on Jun 03, 2005. It seems, in fact, ALL talkabout radios are made by Giant International based in China. Any quality difference between models are just due to different designs, quality control, etc., and not due to different manufacturers.

Making the Right Call with the MOTOROLA C117

By EDWIN P. SALLAN

YOU'RE in the market for a new mobile phone but fancy features like color display, built-in camera, Bluetooth, GPRS and other similar bells and whistles are of little to no consequence to you. You just want something you can use for voice calls and text messages, nothing more. So does Motorola's no-frills, entry-level C117 fit the bill?

First, the phone is as simple as entry-level handsets come. With a silver metallic plastic finish, the C117 is small and light and comes with a monochrome display and blue LED that easily reminded me of the Nokia 8210, a phone that was once very popular with the ladies. Unlike the 8210, however, the C117 has a soft rubber keypad that even guys with big hands should find a joy to use. It even has an up, down, left and right direction button with a dedicated text messaging joystick-like button at the center.

For an entry-level model, the C117, which save for its appearance is actually identical to the C115 and C116 models that...READ ENTIRE ARTICLE>>>
