Wireless networks are rapidly becoming more popular and coming down in price. Since they don't require cables, you can use the devices anywhere in an office or home, even out on the patio. There's no need to roll out an Ethernet network cable to each room of a house; you can network anywhere -- without wires. Outside of the home, wireless networking is available in hotspots at coffee shops, businesses, airports -- great when you're on the road and need to get some work done. For convenience, wireless networking is the answer.
What Wireless Standard is Right for Me? Now that you've decided to create a wireless network, the next step is to figure out which wireless standard to use.
Basically, a standard is a set of specifications for a device. All devices that follow a specific standard share operating characteristics, such as the radio frequency used and maximum data transfer speed.
For wireless networking, there are three standards to choose from at this time:
802.11b
802.11a
802.11g

Customer Review: Linksys WUSB11 version info.
If you are looking for an excellent usb adapter for wifi hotspots, the Linksys WUSB11 maybe just what you are looking for.
Versions 2.8 (don't know about 2.6) to 4.0 are rated at 62 mw transmit power. This extra power will allow you to connect to more distant hotspots than the lower power (31 mw) units.
Although you only using 802.11b which tops out at 11Mb vs the 802.11g's 54Mb, you must consider that the dsl and cable modems supply only 256K-5Mps of bandwith. So the extra speed of the 802.11g doesn't buy you anything for internet browsing. Also the 802.11g's speed drops dramatically with distance so that the 802.11b adapters like the WUSB11 may actually give you faster performance on long distances.
If you are looking for an adapter to use with Tivo2 then don't get a version 4, versions 2.5 and 2.8 seem the best for tivo2.
Why did I rate it 4 instead of 5 stars? I use linux alot and the newer versions of WUSb11(v4 and v3) don't seem to have linux drivers yet (ndis wrappers are not working for me with v4). This situation will most likely be resolved when new drivers are written, as is always the case with linux.

Customer Review: Average capabilities
This unit worked as advertised but short on distance. I have 98 SE and this unit was the only one that worked for me. I tried others but 98 would not run them. I'm satisified with the results but wish it had more range.

Customer Review: Good for the price
This has served my wireless network needs very well for the price. Unfortunately, this device does not support WPA encryption (even though the firmware update notes say it does) so I cannot use it on many newer wireless access points or routers. If you are still using 64-128 bit WEP encryption, as I am, this will work just fine, but be prepared for issues with newer routers.
